Friendship with the world is like wearing a pair of Spanx

Friendship with the world is like wearing a pair of Spanx

I love the world.  Truly.  I love to travel to new places and eat foods I’ve never tried before.  I love cramming my hard drive with pictures of all of my experiences. I don’t necessarily love the art of shopping, but I get a lot of enjoyment out of...

I would be lying if I said this year has been an easy one, but it’s not for reasons that you might think. There have been no tragedies. No inability to pay our bills. No major health concerns of any kind. On the contrary, this year has been full of many...

One of the most sobering yet satisfying moments for me as a parent is when I realize I’m getting it wrong. No, you read that last part right. Sobering - because it’s hard to live with myself when I missed a turn somewhere and have to backtrack with my kids. But the satisfaction comes in the gift of a do-over. When revelation comes to eyes that were once concealed by darkness, once overwhelmed by busyness, once overcome with lack of self-awareness...gratitude is never far behind.

I realize my husband and I will never be perfect parents, yet we’re truly leaning on every whispered prayer. And when He reveals a change that needs to happen, I breathe a sigh of relief that there’s “still time” and I can alter the course moving forward.

Parents, let’s relish those moments when our eyes are opened. Life is one sojourn after another until the very next lesson uproots our way of thinking and progresses us further on this journey. Let’s not get so comfortable as to think the truth can’t still be taught. #thissideofgrace

Saturday ended our first full week of a new year searching for gifts. It’s imperative to be intentional when the world is on fire or we’ll burn right along with it. So we celebrated a birthday with candles and tea, poblano soup and an abundance of cheesecake. We watched Tolkien, built Legos, read Scripture and turned off the news. It didn’t change the world, but it filled our hearts and reminded us that the work we need to do always starts inside these walls. #thissideofgrace

Happy 17th, Lillian Nicole! You’re our old soul
Happy 17th, Lillian Nicole! You’re our old soul with an observant mind. You’re comfortable in your own silence but thrive in your group of amazing friends. This past year we’ve watched you grow and step into more of who you are and it makes us proud. Where have the years gone? Soon it’ll be time to fly, but keep your eyes on the One who directs those wings and we know His plan will never fail. Love you, oldest girl. We are so grateful to watch you turn another year older. #lilliannicole #raisingarrows #trainingthemup

Gracious, I could never choose a favorite @annvoskamp quote for anything in the world. ...but if I had to push one near the top of the list, this would be the one. Every year, as this travels back around in my memories, I am gifted a timely reminder. Put on brave today, friends. His name is Jesus. #braveiswhatwedo
